Polarized and mirrored sports glasses: how do they work and who are they suitable for?

Polarising and mirrored lenses in sunglasses are an increasingly common standard that is now offered by many manufacturers. But few people know what their main advantages actually are, and who these glasses are for. In this article, we will answer the most common questions about sports glasses, present the main advantages of each lens and give you advice on how to care for your glasses.

What is polarization?
At first glance, the glasses look like the classic ones, the difference is that the lenses contain a special chemical filter that ensures polarization. Thanks to this, the view through the glasses is free from distracting glare. Polarized sunglasses block horizontal light waves that reflect off of surfaces such as water, snow or glass. Thanks to the filter, the path of horizontal light is altered, effectively reducing the bright and unpleasant glare caused by horizontal waves.

What are the advantages of polarized glasses?
The main benefits of polarised glasses include glare filtering, better colour rendering, glare reduction and higher contrast between colours. Polarised glasses will give you more comfortable and clearer vision and ultimately provide relief for your eyes. You will especially appreciate the benefits in sunny weather or near reflective surfaces such as bodies of water.
How can I tell if my glasses are polarized?
Unfortunately, polarisation is still not standard on all sunglasses and sports glasses. Those that do are usually marked with a label or sticker directly on the lenses. If you want to check the polarisation yourself, you can try a simple test. A polarizing filter does not transmit light polarized perpendicular to it, allowing us to see normally through the glasses. The only thing that is filtered out is the glare caused by horizontally polarized light. So if you place two pairs of glasses turned 90 degrees behind each other, the filter will block both horizontal and vertical polarization and the glasses become opaque because no light will pass through them.

How do mirrored glasses work?
Mirrored sports glasses are made to provide eye protection while optimizing visual perception in a variety of conditions. The lenses of these glasses are usually covered with a special metallic coating that reflects some of the light. This coating helps to reduce glare and reflection of light from sunlight, which can be especially helpful during outdoor activities. All of our glasses also contain special filters that help eliminate dangerous ultraviolet (UV) rays and protect your eyes from excessive glare.
What are the benefits of mirrored glasses?
Sport glasses with mirrored lenses, provide several key benefits for sports and other outdoor activities. Thanks to the protective filter, the lenses block dangerous ultraviolet rays, protecting the eyes from their negative UV effects, such as corneal and retinal damage. The mirror coating on the lenses also helps reflect excessive light and sun glare. This eliminates glare, which is particularly useful for sports in the sun such as skiing, golf or water sports.

What is the difference between polarized and mirrored glasses?
The lenses of polarized glasses contain a special film that prevents distracting glare caused by horizontal light. Mirrored glasses, on the other hand, are treated with a metal filter that reflects light away from them and causes the so-called mirror effect. This metal then reflects the amount of light that passes through the glasses by up to 50 percent.
How to care for sports glasses?
Neither polarised nor mirrored glasses require any extra care compared to conventional ones - just clean the lenses of the glasses regularly, prevent mechanical damage and store them in a protective case. In addition, it is important not to damage the metal filter of mirrored glasses. We therefore recommend that you clean your glasses ideally with the microfibre glasses cloth included in the pack, or with water or cleaning agents designed for this purpose.

Choosing the right sports glasses depends on the specific sport, conditions and personal preferences. It is important that the glasses provide sufficient protection, comfort and optimum visibility in the environment. All of our Lumiva glasses contain a special filter that blocks dangerous ultraviolet rays, ensuring maximum protection for your eyes. At the same time, the glasses are made of extremely durable materials that protect your eyes from potential injuries.
