Light transmission classification of lenses

When choosing sports glasses, it is important to consider not only their design and comfort, but also their lighting characteristics. By knowing about light transmission, lens darkness and other factors, you will be able to choose the glasses that will perfectly meet your requirements and provide you with maximum comfort in the given conditions. In this article, we'll cover all the essential information regarding the light transmission of sports glasses so that you can choose the right glasses for yourself next time.

The light transmission of the lens, or the degree of darkening, is one of the key factors to consider when choosing sunglasses for sports. This factor indicates the amount of light, expressed as a percentage, that is able to penetrate the lens. The higher the percentage, the more light the visor will let through and vice versa.

The lens of your glasses therefore normally acts as a light filter, regulating how much light enters your eyes. Filters are divided into five categories based on how much light they absorb. This classification can be recognized just by looking at the glasses, as they vary according to the tint of the lenses. Darker glasses tend to attenuate more light, which is useful when playing sports in very sunny weather. Conversely, lighter glasses may be better in lower light conditions.

For better reference, we also provide the light transmission classification in the following table:
